An AI website builder is better for getting a simple site online quickly and testing an idea. WordPress is better when the site has to grow, needs specific functions or has to be portable between suppliers. Neither one writes your positioning for you, so the hard decisions remain yours.
What is the real difference?
It is the difference between generated output on someone's platform and software you control. An AI builder such as Wix Harmony can create pages, sections and starter content from a description of your business, which you then refine in an editor. WordPress is open source publishing software. You, or someone you hire, set it up and look after it.
"AI website builder" is a broad label. Some products are classic hosted builders with AI on top, and some generate code. Check which kind you're looking at, because that decides what you can change and take with you.
How do they compare?
| AI website builder | WordPress | |
|---|---|---|
| First version | Very fast | Slower, needs set-up and choices |
| Control | Within the product's limits | Broad: code, plugins, hosting |
| Upkeep | Mostly handled by the platform | Updates and backups are on you or a supplier |
| Portability | Check per product | Software and data can move |
| Distinctiveness | Depends on how much you change | Depends on who designs it |
| Main risk | A site that looks fine and says nothing | A site nobody maintains |
When is an AI builder enough?
- You're testing an idea and may change direction soon
- You need something credible online this week
- A small number of pages covers everything people need
- Winning customers doesn't depend much on your website
That's a good, sensible use. A simple site that exists beats a perfect one that doesn't. See also what's the best website for a small business.
When is WordPress the better choice?
- You need a specific function that an existing plugin covers
- The site will grow to many pages with structured content
- You want to be able to change hosting or supplier without starting again
- Someone is clearly responsible for maintenance
Without that last condition, the choice gets weaker. An unattended WordPress site is a liability. Here's what maintenance involves and costs.
What should you check in AI-generated content?
Check every sentence, because generated text can sound right without being true. This is the warning that matters most, and it applies however good the tool is.
- Claims. Remove experience, numbers, clients or certificates you can't back up.
- Sameness. Replace any sentence a competitor could use unchanged.
- Images. Don't let generated images pass as your team, your work or your premises.
- Real text. Confirm key content can be read by search engines and AI tools.
- Legal pages. Have privacy and cookie texts checked. A generated version may not fit your business.
What is the decision rule?
Ask what happens if a competitor generates almost the same homepage tomorrow. If that wouldn't matter, an AI builder is fine for now. If it would, the tool isn't your issue: you need a clearer story and a distinct look, which is what custom or template weighs up. We use AI heavily in our own process too. It makes building faster, but it doesn't replace the decisions. Our websites start from €3,950, excluding VAT.
