Use a template when your needs are simple and speed and budget matter most. Choose custom when your site has to set you apart, carries a story that doesn't fit a standard layout or has to connect with your systems. The right question isn't which one is better, but what the site has to do.
How do they compare?
| Template | Custom | |
|---|---|---|
| Fits when | Your content fits the layout | The layout has to fit your story |
| Stands out | Hard: others use the same one | That's the point |
| Technical base | Depends on the template and plugins | Built for what you need |
| Ownership | Check the platform's terms | Agree on it up front |
| Changing later | Easy within the limits | As flexible as it was built to be |
When is a template the right choice?
When you're testing an idea, need to be online fast, or when your website doesn't play a big part in winning customers. It's a perfectly good choice, as long as you know its limits and can actually fill it with good content.
When does custom pay off?
- Your market looks alike and the first impression helps decide
- You sell something complex that needs its own explanation
- The site has to work with your CRM, planning or other systems
- You want full control over speed, structure and how machines read your pages
What about AI website builders?
They make a first version very quick, which is useful for testing. But the hard parts haven't changed: knowing what to say, having a distinct look and getting the details right. We use AI heavily in our own process, and that's why custom work has become faster and more affordable. It doesn't replace the decisions.
What about the price?
AI-assisted development has made custom more reachable than it used to be. Our websites start from €3,950, excluding VAT. Before you compare that with a template, count your own hours for setting it up, writing, and fixing what doesn't quite fit.
