Brand identity is what you create and control: your name, logo, type, colours and voice. Brand image is what people actually think of you, based on everything they experience. Identity is what you send. Image is what arrives. The useful work is finding the gap between them.
How do they compare?
| Brand identity | Brand image | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | How you present yourself | How people perceive you |
| Who shapes it | You, by design | Customers, staff, the market |
| Made of | Name, logo, type, colour, voice, images | Experiences, conversations, reviews, reputation |
| Changes | When you decide | Slowly, through what people experience |
| How you check it | Look at your own materials | Ask people outside your company |
Why does the difference matter?
It matters because the two have different solutions. You can change your identity in a project. You can't simply decide on a new image. A new logo won't repair a reputation for slow delivery, and it would be a waste of money to try. On the other hand, excellent work can be held back by an identity that makes you look smaller or more dated than you are.
How do you find out what your brand image is?
Ask people, and listen for their words instead of your own. A small and honest round is enough to start with:
- Talk to customers, lost prospects and new staff. Ask how they would describe you to a colleague and who they'd compare you to.
- Avoid leading questions. "Do you see us as innovative?" gets a polite yes. "What are we known for?" gets something useful.
- Read what's out there. Reviews, job sites, directories and mentions on other sites.
- Ask AI tools. They often repeat what's written about you, so a wrong description can point to an old source. Here's how to check what ChatGPT says about you.
- Put it next to your own story. Write your intended identity and the words you heard on one page.
What do you do about a gap?
It depends on which way the gap runs. This is the rule we'd use:
| What you find | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The work is great, but people assume you're small or old-fashioned | Identity lags behind reality | Improve the identity. See refresh or rebrand |
| People like you but can't say what you do | Unclear message | Fix positioning and copy before any design |
| The identity looks strong, but experiences disappoint | Promise outruns delivery | Fix the service first. Design only raises expectations |
| Different groups describe different companies | Inconsistent behaviour or materials | Pick one story and write it down |
Can you influence your brand image?
Yes, but only indirectly. Image follows repeated experience: what you promise, what you deliver, how you answer a complaint and what others say about you. Identity helps by making all of that recognisable, so that each good experience adds up under one name. That's why consistency is more than tidiness. Clear brand guidelines help a team stay recognisable when you aren't in the room.
If you've found that the identity is the real problem, our packages run from a Brand Refresh from €1,450 to a Brand System from €4,950, excluding VAT.
